The changes that are happening in the Publishing Industry go far deeper than the transition from paper to digital media. The revolution generated by the growth of the Internet is being compared to what followed the invention of the printing press in Germany. After 1440 and now, in the last thirty years, new technologies have enabled information and knowledge to be accessed more easily. This has caused a massive disruption of the status quo and we are still on the roller coaster of technological development set in motion by the availability of new communications tools and systems. The move to digital publishing is one of the many transitions to be caused by the availability of new software and hardware. The Software Industry does not have a very good track record on implementing technology. Even today it is estimated that three out of every five major software systems are failures. The reason for this is that the industry and many of its clients believe that technology is a solution in itself, whereas technology is only really a means of implementing solutions to problems. If not enough time is taken to identify the root cause of problems, then those problems will persist. So, you may feel that this is not relevant to the Publishing Industry because you know what your problems are. True! But now we get to the real crux of the problem - only a few software technology companies try to understand what it is that their clients really need. Ultra Knowledge maintains a user-centric focus on its business. This not only means that we are driven by what the end-user needs but also by how our clients will use our software. We believe our technology can succeed only if we use it to resolve the problems experienced by our customers. It may sound as though Ultra Knowledge apportions all the blame for failed systems to the software industry. This is not the case. The other cause of under-performing systems is the failure of clients to appreciate how software technology can change and improve their business. An example of this in the Publishing Industry is the acceptance of second-rate search software. Giving your site users proper access to your content is critical to your success. SEO is important but pointless if your users are moving to your competition because they can find what they need more easily elsewhere. Ultra Knowledge have a great deal of experience in the successful design and implementation of software. From this we have learned that we have to work closely with our clients if we are going to put forward solutions that use technology not just to resolve their problems but also to open up new business avenues. |
