The Social Web

One of the more remarkable changes brought about by the growing influence of the Web in the last few years has been the development of Social Networking.  At first this seemed to be a fringe activity but, with the wider adoption of broadband, it has not taken long for it to become just as popular an activity online as it is offline!

What is Social Networking?  It is what people have been doing for centuries - finding others with similar interests and communicating - exchanging opinions, asking questions, sharing information, getting feedback and learning.  What is the difference on the Web?  It's just a matter of scale.

Social Networking online is not just a fashion; people are social animals and they are looking for opportunities to build networks of like-minded contacts they can communicate with on subjects they share an interest in.  The experience of large Social Networks has been that only about 1% of their network members are regular contributors.  This is not the case in 'Social Publishing'!

Communities created by publishers have found that between 50 and 80 percent of the community members are active on a regular basis.  Recent research has shown that behaviour in smaller communities is different when there is a strong common interest; especially when the group is sponsored by a well established brand.

For the Publishing Industry this is an opportunity not to be missed.  Ultra Knowledge are able to facilitate a number of strategies that will connect Editors to people, people to people and people to relevant content.  Building communities around mutually shared interests can bring real benefit:
  • Boosting the depth and quality of the content available (at minimal extra cost)
  • Increasing your advertising inventory
  • Offering access to quality profiled ad placement opportunities
  • Strengthening the user experience offered by your site
If there is a negative in Social Publishing it is the changes that are being forced on Editors over and above their having to cope with 'going digital'. Editors now have additional responsibilities.  Not only are they expected to be shepherds of information; site users are now going to become part of their flock too.
